La Villita
The day I went to La Villita, the sun was shining, and it was the perfect day to walk around and visit this "little village". The first thing you notice when you walk through the gates is that it really looks like a small town or village with narrow streets and historical wooden and brick buildings that look like people's homes. I understand why after I read the history of La Villita; it was the first neighborhood in San Antonio so these were houses that people really lived in! These days, La Villita's houses are actually art galleries and shops selling many different types of handcrafted items. You can find paintings, pottery, woven rugs and blankets, cowboy hats, clothing, special kinds of Texas foods...too many things to list! If you are a visitor to San Antonio looking for gifts for your family, this is a great place to visit. Although I did not stop to eat, there also seem to be several nice cafes and restaurants to stop and eat at inside La Villita.
I really enjoyed my visit and found it hard to know what my favorite object could be. I loved the beautiful streets and just being able to walk around. I also enjoyed the Arneson River Theater. This is a theatre on the other side of the river from La Villita. You can stand on a balcony on the La Villita side and watch a performance on the other! The day I visited, they had a band playing jazz music. However, I think my favorite object is my giant rooster. I found him in front of one of one of the art houses. I have no idea what you could do with a giant, metal rooster...but I really loved him as you can see in my picture! So, I encourage you to visit La Villita--I am sure you'll find something crazy, strange or wonderful of your own!
I think the rooster statue would make an amazing addition to your living room.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you doing to that poor rooster!?!
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree that the river theater is a great spot for live music. I saw a few acts during the international accordion festival. Having the barges cross in front of the stage added to an already pleasant live music experience.
I hope it at least bought you dinner first...
